Like many storied drinks, no one really knows who was responsible for the first Cosmopolitan. It could have been Toby Cecchini in 1987, and it was the Rainbow Room in NYC that gave the drink its start.
Shortly after, a certain television show about four best friends also set in NYC brought the Cosmopolitan to a mass audience before the turn of the new millennium. Like many good ‘90s trends, this one is currently experiencing a resurgence and new appreciation.
While it may be served in a martini cocktail glass, the Cosmopolitan isn’t a martini cocktail at all. A martini cocktail must contain two ingredients: vodka and vermouth. The Cosmopolitan is much more sweet and sour than a Martini Cocktail.
