Cocktail Spotlight: The Cosmopolitan

Cocktail Spotlight: The Cosmopolitan

Learn all about the classic cosmo and how to make this “it” drink.

Sep. 23, 2024

The Cosmopolitan cocktail is back in a big way. This ‘90s drink is experiencing a resurgence in popularity thanks to its beautiful hue, timeless elegance and refreshing taste. Learn all about the Cosmopolitan, including its history and how to make it.

What Is a Cosmopolitan Cocktail Made Of?

This iconic drink combines vodka, cranberry juice, lime juice and triple sec, resulting in a striking pink hue and a delightful balance of sweet and tart flavors. It’s typically served in a martini cocktail glass and garnished with a lime twist.

While this recipe remains a classic for a reason, many mixologists have experimented with variations. Some use different fruit juices like pomegranate or raspberry for a unique twist, while others incorporate flavored vodka or infuse the drink with herbs and spices for added complexity.

We like making our version with GREY GOOSE® L’Orange Flavored Vodka for an extra citrus punch, but Grey Goose Vodka will also work well in our recipe. Some people like making it with lemon-flavored vodka as well.

What Does a Cosmopolitan Taste Like?

Due to its cranberry juice, lime juice and triple sec (orange-flavored liqueur), the Cosmopolitan is a tart, fruity drink. Our version packs even more bold orange flavor with Grey Goose L’Orange as the spirit. Its flavor profile is tangy and slightly sweet, making it a refreshing tasting drink — and a perennial favorite for a sophisticated night on the town.

When Was the Cosmo Invented?

Like many storied drinks, no one really knows who was responsible for the first Cosmopolitan. It could have been Toby Cecchini in 1987, and it was the Rainbow Room in NYC that gave the drink its start.

Shortly after, a certain television show about four best friends also set in NYC brought the Cosmopolitan to a mass audience before the turn of the new millennium. Like many good ‘90s trends, this one is currently experiencing a resurgence and new appreciation.

How Is the Cosmo Different from Martini Cocktails?

While it may be served in a martini cocktail glass, the Cosmopolitan isn’t a martini cocktail at all. A martini cocktail must contain two ingredients: vodka and vermouth. The Cosmopolitan is much more sweet and sour than a Martini Cocktail.
